Our Story & Origins
Lakou Lokal was founded in 2024 as an intentional response to the unique hurdles faced by Haitian immigrant families navigating life in the diaspora.
Many parents, youth, and elders struggle in silence with the weight of cultural transition, immigration pressure, and generational misunderstandings. Lakou Lokal was built to be a safe, stigma-free bridge where families can find comfort and practical tools.
The Meaning of "Lakou"
In traditional Haitian society, a lakou is a communal cluster of homes centered around a shared courtyard. It is the heart of community life—where elders mentor the youth, meals are shared, decisions are weighed collectively, and no one is left to face life alone.
